As one of the correspondents on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Carell got a shot at exposing his imaginative sense of humor and ability to handle improv. That helped launch his career and eventually earned him the title of "the funniest man" on the cover of Life Magazine. Carell also earned critical acclaim and a large following of fans for his portrayal of one of the most inept bosses in history on The Office.
Before becoming a famous comedian/actor, Carell worked as a mail carrier for a few months, deciding he was very bad at the job. He originally wanted to be a lawyer but couldn't answer why on the application. To Carell's credit, The American Film Institute chose The 40 Year Old Virgin as one of the Top Ten movies of 2006.
May 2007 - Steve Carell grew up in Concord, Massachusetts where he attended the all-boys The Fenn School. He showed early interest in communication when he edited a school newspaper. After graduating from Denison University in Granville, Ohio, Carell pursued a career in comedy at Chicago's Second City troupe. From 1990 to 1996 he taught an improvisational comedy class and was a writer on The Dana Carvey Show. Carell married Nancy Walls, a student he met in his improv class, in 1995. The couple have two children.
Carell landed his first film role (as himself) in John Hughes 1991 Curly Sue with James Belushi. His next big break came when Carell became one of the correspondents on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
After doing several smaller feature films and TV shows, his roles in Bruce Almighty and Bewitched (2004) gained him more fans. He co-wrote (with Judd Apatow) and starred in The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005), which was an instant hit. During these years Carell was an occasional host on Saturday Night Live where he drew more attention and became a household name.
His decision to take on the regular role of Michael Scott in the popular and outrageous TV show The Office earned Carell a 2006 Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Comedy. His role among an all-star ensemble cast in the much-hailed dark comedy of 2006, Little Miss Sunshine, helped the movie earn a spot as one of 2007's five prestigious Academy-Award nominations for Best Picture. Carell has also earned Golden Globe, Emmy, Writers Guild of America, Television Critics Association, Screen Actors Guild of America, MTV Movie, Gotham, Satellite and Teen Choice awards or nominations.
