Joaquin Phoenix was born in Puerto Rico and is the son of former Children of God missionaries John Bottom Amram and Arlyn Dunitz Jochebed.

Joaquin Phoenix changed his name to Leaf as a child to fit in with his siblings' 'earthy' names.

Famous Siblings:

Joaquin's sisters Summer and Rain are actors. His older brother River had amassed an impressive resume prior to his death of a drug overdose in Los Angeles in 1993.

Award-Worthy Performances:

Phoenix picked up a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his role in Gladiator in 2001. He earned a Best Actor Academy Award nomination in 2006 for Walk the Line (he lost to Philip Seymour Hoffman in Capote).

Movie Roles:

Phoenix's first movie role was in the 1986 movie family film, SpaceCamp. He followed that up shortly with Russkies and Parenthood. Phoenix then took a break from feature films for six years before returning opposite Nicole Kidman in To Die For. Other notable film credits include Inventing the Abbotts, Clay Pigeons, 8MM, The Yards, Gladiator, Quills, Buffalo Soldiers, Signs, It's All About Love, The Village, Hotel Rwanda, Ladder 49, Walk the Line, We Own the Night, Reservation Road, and Two Lovers.

Calling It Quits:

In November 2008 Joaquin Phoenix declared he was done with acting and would concentrate on his music career.
